NSCU recently moved away from a completely outsourced model and became the first financial institution in Canada to adopt the TEMENOS T24 banking platform. WTF? No, BTM! Move over Application Performance Monitoring, BTM is not just a conceptual buzz word anymore.

Seriously, what is Business Transaction Management and why all the sudden urgency to have it? Talking to customers and analysts, we have gotten the sense that BTM is really an enabler to many things...

Dynamic system complexity brought on by mergers, acquisitions, new service offerings, technology upgrades and new application deployments is evolving the way we manage our payment processing environments.

At the simple heart of BTM is the ability to holistically capture and display complete, end-to-end transaction data. Next, you need powerful visibility and inquiry tools to correlate these transaction level details with application and network behavior to quickly identify and isolate the root cause of performance problems. The final step is the ability to analyze and communicate your findings, in a common language, amongst the line of business, network, applications and customer service groups.

Going for Gold with NSCU
How NSCU ensured customer service reliability during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games
READ THE FULL STORY >>

The 2010 Olympics were a busy and lucrative time for many businesses and financial institutions in BC. It was estimated that we saw as many as 5000 athletes and officials; 10,000 media members; 14,000 volunteers; and 2.3 million attendees descend upon Vancouver and Whistler – which is not surprising as it is truly one of the most beautiful cities and ski destinations in the world... not to mention home to INETCO.

According to credit card processing firm Moneris Solutions, who compared retail sales in Vancouver and Whistler from Feb 12 – 28, 2010 with those from Feb 13 – March 1, 2009, consumer spending in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. increased 48 per cent during the Olympics, with international shoppers accounting for 22 per cent of all transactions. Visa also reported that their total number of transactions on internationally issued Visa cards in British Columbia was 1.1 million over the same 17 day period in 2009, up 85% from last year.

With 11 branches located along the Vancouver to Whistler corridor and an official "Friend of the Vancouver 2010 Bid", it is not surprising that the North Shore Credit Union also experienced a significant increase in their transaction volumes during these Games. NSCU has become known industry-wide as thought leaders in Member Wellness. Walking into any of their branches can be equated to walking into a "West Coast Financial Spa" – complete with a latte.

The first financial branch established in Whistler over 25 years ago, the financial institution has definitely embraced it’s motto of "Thinking Outside the Bank", redefining the banking experience by tastefully adding a climbing wall, waterfall, fireplace, a mountain bike Kids' Zone, and cool snow boards to the interior decor of the branch. Part of the overall "financial spa" experience is also being able to guarantee customer service reliability, especially during high-volume transaction times such as the Olympic and Paralympic games.

NSCU has definitely "gone for the gold" with the recent implementation of INETCO Insight, business transaction management software for the payment processing environment.

With INETCO Insight, NSCU was quickly prepared to handle their Olympic transaction volumes by:

  • Monitoring the entire, end-to-end path of every international debit and credit card transaction for quick isolation of root cause issues causing transaction slowdowns or failures to occur
  • Being alerted in real-time to any transaction completion issues, stand-in issues, traffic capacity issues and ATM performance issues
  • Quickly identifying fraud error response codes while still meeting PCI compliancy rules and Interac regulations.

We applaud NSCU for being a team player and their podium performance in customer service reliability!

INETCO Insight 4.6 Revisited
Everything you want to know about your payment processing environment but are too busy to ask. LEARN MORE >>

Most of you have no shortage of questions about how your payment processing environments are performing.

Q: How many transactions were attempted versus actually completed?

Our favorite answer: One of our customers was able to reduce the cost of failed ATM transactions by 90% by exploring this issue

Q: Do I have intermittent service quality issues at particular times of day, transaction volume levels, etc.?

Our favorite answer: One of our customers was being put in stand-in mode by a partner multiple times a day until they tracked it to batch processes consuming host time.

Q: How often is X happening and what's the impact (where the " X " factor consists of certain transaction types, status codes, response time thresholds, etc.)?

Our favorite answer: One of our customers found a cluster of ATM machines that were resetting their TCP connection multiple times a day, for no apparent reason.

The problem is finding the time to answer those questions, given the often fragmented, painful process you have to go through to get the information.

We've seen network operations specialists use complex, fragile scripts; we've watched line of business executives export multiple log files into Excel; we've even seen application support engineers write raw SQL against switch databases. Not one of you seemed particularly enamored with the process...

We think you'll like how easy it is to gain access to complete transaction information with INETCO Insight 4.6. Three great new capabilities help you instantly access the transaction performance information you need to answer all those questions you've been too busy to ask:

Inquiry: Find any transaction that happened in the last 8-days in less than a minute

Network transaction details: See all the transaction attempts and TCP-level problems that you'll never find in your switch database

Standard reports: Gauge the business impact of incidents, spot brownouts and service quality issues down to the terminal or customer level, and get the historical data to plan and optimize better.
