Recognition spans self-supervised learning and generative AI applications in fraud and financial crime detection
VANCOUVER, B.C. — August 25, 2026 — INETCO, provider of the INETCO BullzAI® real-time fraud prevention platform, is proud to announce that it has been recognized as a Sample Vendor in two categories of the Gartner Hype Cycle for Fraud and Financial Crime Prevention, 2026 report:
- Self-Supervised Learning for Fraud Detection (Benefit Rating: High)
- Generative AI in Financial Crime Detection (Benefit Rating: Transformational)
Banks continue to lose ground on fraud even though they are spending more to stop it. According to the 2025 Gartner Fraud Detection and AML Survey, “despite 53% of institutions increasing their fraud prevention budgets by 5% or more, 70% of banks continue to see rising fraud losses.” The same survey found that “over a third of banks detect less than 60% of fraud before losses occur and only 31% achieve preemptive detection rates above 80%, exposing a big gap in capabilities.”1
“In our opinion, this research confirms what we see with customers every day: most fraud is only uncovered after the money’s gone — not before,” said Bijan Sanii, CEO and Founder of INETCO. “INETCO BullzAI closes that gap with self-training behavioral models and precision fraud blocking that intervenes at the transaction level in real time. AI-assisted investigation brings that same speed to fraud case management, using a proprietary small language model deployed on-premise so analysts can get answers without transaction data ever leaving the bank. INETCO believes this Gartner recognition reinforces that we’re solving the right problem, and are ready to help financial institutions stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated payment fraud and financial crime threats.”
The 2026 Gartner report came less than two weeks after INETCO launched INETCO BullzAI Investigate, a new AI-assisted fraud investigation module that brings agentic AI to fraud case management. INETCO BullzAI Investigate helps fraud teams manage growing investigation workloads and deliver around-the-clock decision support while keeping sensitive data secure and analysts firmly in control.
Detecting fraud with self-supervised learning
Gartner gives the “Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) for Fraud Detection” category a “High” benefit rating. According to Gartner: “Self-supervised learning (SSL) is an approach to machine learning (ML) where labels or supervisory signals are created from the data itself, without having to rely on historical outcome data or external (human) supervisors to provide labels. SSL creates surrogate labels or prediction tasks automatically from unlabeled data to train models in a supervised way. In contrast, the more familiar unsupervised learning finds structure in data without creating such surrogate supervised targets.”
“Banks must stay ahead as attackers use AI to constantly change tactics and create new threat vectors,” Gartner explains, adding that “self-supervised learning enables ML models to be trained to detect anomalies in emerging fraud types for which historical, labeled data doesn’t exist. It ingests transaction data from payment systems and signals, such as behavioral biometrics and device intelligence. SSL-generated labels can later be validated against case-investigation outcomes (true versus false positives).”
Applying generative AI to financial crime detection
Gartner rates “Generative AI in Financial Crime Detection” as “Transformational.” The report describes how banks and vendors are fighting back by using GenAI to augment their existing systems to make them more accurate, more efficient and more productive. According to the research: “GenAI augments anti-money laundering (AML) and payment fraud detection systems through AI assistants for investigator support and reporting. GenAI also helps predict and simulate new fraud attacks, allowing financial institutions to better prepare and stress-test their detection systems.”
Potential applications that provide significant room to improve investigator productivity include “GenAI assistants for KYC, fraud and AML investigations that can pull data from multiple sources, triage cases, suggest next steps in the investigation process, and prepopulate fraud and AML reports”.
