What is card-not-present fraud?
Card-not-present (CNP) fraud is accelerating across instant payments, e-commerce, mobile wallet and other digital channels, as attackers exploit stolen card data or credentials – often sourced from breaches, phishing scams or the dark web – to make unauthorized online or phone purchases. Unlike card-present transactions, there is no physical verification. As a result, CNP fraud drives higher chargebacks, account takeovers, friendly fraud, card testing and triangulation – directly impacting revenue, false declines and customer trust.
