What is a card scheme message error?
A card scheme message error happens when an acquirer fails to successfully exchange a message with a card network such as Visa, Mastercard or American Express. Merchant advice code (MAC) and response code errors can be triggered due to scheme rule violations (associated with merchant category restrictions, fraud and money laundering), invalid or missing mandatory transaction fields, incorrect field length or data type, wrong message versions (like a wrong ISO 8583 variant) or network connectivity issues. These errors lead to costly unexpected decline rates and card network penalties.
